Ruth Foster Fleming

Ruth Foster Fleming, 79, of East Hampton, N.Y., passed away April 27 after a short hospital stay resulting from respiratory complications. Her daughter Faith was with her.

Born in 1933 in Sagaponack, N.Y. to Amy (Gould) and Everett Foster, Ruth grew up with her sister Janet (Lester) on what is still known today as the Foster Farm. She attended Sagaponack School, Bridgehampton High School, and later graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Skidmore College, Saratoga, N.Y. in 1955.

She married Guy Fleming in 1956, living in Forest Hills, N.Y. while working at Bloomingdale's and Bonwit Teller in New York City. Later the couple moved back to Sagaponack, where they restored the family farmhouse while Guy worked as a freelance book designer and artist.

With their two children, Faith and Douglas, they relocated to Sheepscott and later Alna in 1968 where they greatly enjoyed living for 26 years, working together to restore a 200-year-old farmhouse, gardening, and raising a host of pets. Ruth worked at Wiscasset High School and eventually took over the position of Director of Adult Education for the Town of Wiscasset. In 1994 they returned to live on Long Island in East Hampton. Her husband Guy died in 2001.

In the years following her return to Long Island, Ruth became an avid quilter, becoming active with a local quilting group and creating many beautiful quilts given to family, friends, and as donations to local charities. She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of East Hampton, serving as a Deacon and active with The Ramblers. She volunteered over the years at the East Hampton Food Pantry, generously donated to various local charities, and happily and voraciously read whenever she could, with faithful cat Clyde at her side for 22 years. She shone brightly in later life, enjoying her grandchildren and family.

Ruth was also preceded in death by her sister, Janet (Foster) Lester in 2004.

She is survived by her children, Faith Fleming (Stowe) of South Bend, Ind., and Douglas Fleming of Petersburg, Alaska; grandchildren, Hugh Fleming, Ian Fleming, and Claire Stowe; nieces, Amy (Lester) Scattaglia of Rolling Meadows, Ill., and Jennifer Lester of Watertown, Mass.; and cousins, Clifford Foster of Sagaponack, N.Y., and Julia (Foster) Mumford of Waverly, Penn.

A celebration of life will be planned for a later time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the 1st Presbyterian Church of East Hampton; the East Hampton Food Pantry; or the East Hampton Public Library.
