Chainsaw Safety Class at HVNC
Hidden Valley Nature Center
131 Egypt Rd
Two day class (April 21 & 28) for those new to chainsaws, especially designed for women who want to use chainsaws for firewood, tree felling, brush cutting, carpentry, etc.
Day one starts inside with topics including an overview of chainsaw nomenclature and safety features, saw chain filing, the saw tooth, light maintenance and troubleshooting, and personal protective equipment (PPE). The class moves outside and students operate chainsaws at boring and bucking stations.
Day two consists of outside work in small groups. Trainees learn more about safety, ergonomics, saw handling, the open face notch, borecutting, felling tools and techniques, guide bar reactive forces, snag management, spring pole management, and the Homeowner’s firewood stump.
Students are encouraged to provide a tuned saw, saw and filing tools, PPE (steel toed boots, leg protection, hearing, eye, and head protection) and gloves, all meeting CLP/OSHA standards. We can help find equipment for women. There will be limited PPE to try on and borrow. Some saws will be available for use.
No previous experience necessary. Instructors are Pete Tracy and John Cullen, Certified Logging Professional Instructors, and tish carr, a Maine Licensed Arborist.
Co-sponsored by Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, which offers some scholarships (firstname.lastname@example.org). The fee for the class is $140 ($130 for HVNC, SWOAM and MOFGA members).
