Lincoln Academy Climate Club Acts on Idling

Lincoln Academy Climate Action Club students are interested in reducing their carbon footprint and saving the planet. They've been working on several projects to that end and the most recent is the installation of a no-idling zone sign at the drop-off areas at the school. Parents and students will be asked to join the initiative. As they pick up or drop off riders, they'll be asked to stop idling their cars. Soon, bus drivers will be approached and asked to consider an idling moratorium. Science teacher and club advisor Charlie Scimone has an entire list of idling myth busters. Contrary to belief, idling is not good for engine components, produces unnecessary pollution, wastes fuel, and is not an effective way to warm up a vehicle. In addition to the no-idling zone project, the Climate Action Club is working with Paul Kando on a grant to produce a video demonstrating performing an energy audit, with further plans to distribute the video to schools throughout the state. "We're working on paper versus plastic, and recycling battery projects as well," said Scimone. The Climate Action Club needs the help and support of the community to keep the Damariscotta region a great place to live.
