HomeCheckers Changes Hands
By Dominik Lobkowicz

Local property management company HomeCheckers has changed hands, and the new owner has it in mind to quadruple the company's business within three years.

New owner Bruce Hartford said the business offers customizable services including serving as a responding party for security alarms, checking the property while the owners are away, and providing referrals to trustworthy contractors, among others.

Hartford bought the business in late December from founders Dirk and Ann Poole.

According to Ann Poole, she and Dirk decided to start the business after clients from a cleaning business they sold in 2007 expressed interest in having someone keep an eye on their properties while they were out of state.

The couple would perform exterior and interior checks of homes, and correspond with the owners to keep them apprised of its status, Poole said.

"We ran HomeCheckers for almost seven years; we were just ready to focus on a couple other businesses that we own and decided it was time to pass HomeCheckers on to somebody else," she said. "We were very pleased when Bruce was interested because we felt that he was the perfect person to take over."

With the sale, the business's name was changed slightly from HomeCheckers Midcoast LLC to HomeCheckers Lincoln County.

Hartford, a Nobleboro native who now lives in Jefferson, liked the prospects of the business.

"It sounded good to me," Hartford said. "It's a business that I want to grow."

Hartford plans to utilize local contractors he is familiar with to help serve the company's clients.

"You can present me with any scenario and within 30 seconds I can tell you who to bring in," Hartford said. "We've got that knowledge."

For HomeCheckers, Hartford said custom contracts are par for the course and it comes down to what the customer wants, both for services and the length of the contract. The company can work with homeowners who visit only during the summer months, locals who are traveling, or even in-home residents, he said.

Hartford has already increased the company's clients by a third since December and hopes the trend will continue as he gets closer to retiring from the U.S. Postal Service in 2017.

"My goal is to grow this business four-fold by that time to replace my income," he said.
