A Nobleboro woman was killed in a head-on collision that closed a section of Route 1 for almost five hours July 12.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Katharine Brown, 83, died after the southbound 2000 Honda Civic she was operating crossed the centerline, entered the northbound lane and struck a 2007 GMC pickup driven by 51-year-old Daryl Rhode of Rogers City, Mich.

Rhode's vehicle was traveling north towing a large, fifth-wheel camper.

Brown was found inside her vehicle by first responders and it appears she died instantly, according to the LCSO. Brown was the lone occupant of her vehicle. Occupants in the Rhode vehicle were not injured.

The crash occurred around 10:54 a.m., south of the Nobleboro boat launch, and about one mile north of the intersection of Route 1 and Back Meadow Road.

Blood samples will be obtained from Brown by the Medical Examiners Office but deputies do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in this crash, according to the LCSO.

A section of Route 1 was closed for about five hours while the crash scene was investigated. Traffic was rerouted through Center Street in Nobleboro.

Deputies were assisted in this investigation by the Maine State Police, Maine Warden's Service, Nobleboro Fire Department, Lincoln County Communications Center, Damariscotta Police Department, and the Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service.
