Motorcyclist Hospitalized After Edgecomb Accident
By Dominik Lobkowicz

A 58-year-old York man was LifeFlighted to Central Maine Medical Center for a "life threatening head injury" and other internal injuries after his motorcycle was struck by another vehicle on Route 1 in Edgecomb Sept. 1, according to a Lincoln County Sheriff's Office press release.

David Fitzgerald was stopped in southbound traffic on a 2006 Honda Goldwing motorcycle when he was struck from the rear by a 2003 Toyota Corolla operated by a 17-year-old male.

The operator of the Corolla failed to see the motorcycle and began to skid, and the motorcycle was projected forward, laid down on its side and slid to rest, ejecting Fitzgerald in the process, according to the release. The juvenile operator was wearing a seat belt but Fitzgerald was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, according to the release.

Fitzgerald's status was not immediately available.

Driver inattention and/or distraction appear to be the primary factor in the accident and neither speed nor alcohol are suspected as factors, though the juvenile male driver, who was uninjured, was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital for a blood alcohol test as required in serious crashes, according to the release.

The accident remains under investigation and a reconstruction of the crash is being conducted by LCSO Sgt. Jason Nein, a crash reconstruction specialist for the agency, according to the release. Deputy Brian Collamore is the primary investigating officer for the accident and was assisted by Deputy Justin Drake.

Route 1 was reduced to one lane for approximately two hours as investigators examined the scene. Edgecomb Fire Department, Wiscasset Fire Department, and Wiscasset Ambulance Service also responded.
