The one-man effort to raise enough money to place an American flag on every utility pole in downtown Damariscotta is already past the halfway mark.

Richard McFarland, 49, of Nobleboro, said more than 25 businesses and organizations have donated to the cause.

McFarland works in maintenance at Bristol Consolidated School and manages the bar at The American Legion Wells-Hussey Post No. 42 in Damariscotta.

He joined Sons of The American Legion about 15 years ago. His father, Arthur McFarland, of New Harbor, is a veteran of the Korean War.

Richard McFarland was inspired to tackle his latest project after seeing flags on the utility poles in a town in northern Maine. "I think it's going to look awesome in Damariscotta," he said.

The project will place flags on 60 utility poles from the Main Street bridge to the post. The flags will stay up from Memorial Day to Veterans' Day.

McFarland needs to raise $2831.40 to purchase 75 3-by-5-foot flags on 5-foot poles, plus $1000 or so for the necessary liability insurance.

A week ago, he began handing out fliers and soliciting donations at businesses around town. He is grateful for the enthusiastic and generous reception, as well as the support of the Damariscotta Board of Selectmen and Town Manager Matt Lutkus.

McFarland plans to bring flags to Newcastle next.
