Damariscotta Police Partner With Businesses to Benefit Special Olympics
By J.W. Oliver

Every year, the Damariscotta Police Department and law enforcement agencies throughout the state partner with their local businesses to raise money for Special Olympics Maine.

Damariscotta officers solicit donations for an auction at the Special Olympics Maine annual conference. Law enforcement officers and their families bid on the items, and all proceeds from the auction benefit Special Olympics Maine.

This year, Damariscotta Patrol Officer Jason Warlick led the department's efforts.

The department thanks Damariscotta Hardware, Dunkin' Donuts, Hancock Lumber Company, Hammond Lumber Company, Lake Pemaquid Campground and Stars Jewelry for their donations to the auction. The donations raised about $640 for the cause.

These businesses and many others have generously supported Special Olympics Maine for years, Warlick said. He did not have the opportunity to visit every business that has supported the effort in the past, he said.

"On behalf of the Damariscotta Police Department and Special Olympics Maine, we want to thank the local businesses that have been supporting this organization," Warlick said.

The Damariscotta Police Department participates in other benefits for Special Olympics Maine throughout the year.

This year, the department plans to hold a tip-a-cop fundraiser at Dunkin' Donuts in Damariscotta.

Damariscotta officers will also participate in a Fueling Dreams fundraiser at the Irving station in Wiscasset. Officers will sell concessions and run a dunk tank while Special Olympics athletes pump gas for donations.

Damariscotta officers also plan to participate in the Special Olympics Maine Torch Run and possibly the Torch Ride, a motorcycle ride to benefit the organization.

Special Olympics Maine provides competition and year-round training in Olympic sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. For more information, like Special Olympics Maine on Facebook or visit
