A box truck hit a utility pole on Route 129 in South Bristol just after 1 p.m. August 26, knocking down power lines and causing a widespread power outage in the area of Rutherford Island.

The driver of the truck, Dylan Herald, 21, of Damariscotta apparently became distracted, veered off the road, and struck the pole, according to Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Lt. Rand Maker. Herald was not injured in the accident. The box truck, a 2000 Chevrolet, registered to Jane Oliver Gravel of Damariscotta, sustained significant damage.

Power was out several hours in the area while Central Maine Power Company repaired the damaged lines.

The accident reduced vehicle traffic to one lane and closed Route 129 to commercial vehicles due to the low-lying wires.

According to Maker, the South Bristol Fire Department remained on the scene until after 4 p.m.
