The kids will be going back to school in another month or so.

Yes, we were surprised too, when somebody pointed that out in our office this week.

This year it seems like we have been so busy with budgets, and meetings and deadlines and such, we don't know why we are surprised to look up and suddenly feel like the summer season is slipping away.

It isn't, of course. Summer is doing what it always does, arriving too slowly and leaving too quickly for our liking.

However we will forgive anyone, in this summer of budget concerns, for feeling like school is still in session.

On July 23, Jefferson voters signed off on brutal cuts to their school budget. Many voters, no doubt made a difficult decision, squeezed between the rock and the hard place choice of their wallets or their hearts.

There is going to be a real world fallout from this vote.

People are going to lose their jobs. The programs at Jefferson Village School and the education of Jefferson students will be impacted, for better or for worse. Only time will tell.

Not that we wish ill of Jefferson students but we are satisfied that a decision has been made. The voters have spoken. They heard what the budget committee and school officials had to say and made their choice accordingly. It may be bold, it may be shortsighted, but it was their choice to make.

Given the real impacts and the dire warnings from school officials, we are somewhat surprised at the outcome, but we commend every Jefferson voter who made it to the polls July 23.
