3/12/2014 2:00:00 PM Stay Tuned Part III: Retirement
To the Editor:
Right off the bat, we need to correct something we wrote last week, wishing we were not fallible people, but alas, we are. We have learned from the superintendent, and must be clear about this, the teachers do indeed contribute 7.65 percent of their pay into their retirement.
AOS 93 Superintendent Steve Bailey called and emailed to let us know the facts. To his credit, he and his office have been responsive and timely, once requests were made. We have appreciated that over these months of back and forth.
Let us state again, we are not into criticizing the good work of the school board, teachers, administration, or school staff in any way. We do feel that teachers' pay and benefits have gone too far beyond the work experience of the rest of us, and that the only way to call a halt to them is to call attention to them.
We are fine with taking the heat on this and will be happy to correct our own mistakes as we try to piece together this puzzle, which many times feels more like a moving target.
By the way, the taxpayers should have this information accessible at all times when questions arise.
We ask that school salaries and benefits be posted without names, along with all employment contracts - both in the town report and on the town website. If needed, we will resort to a citizen's petition to that effect. For more information, email us at email@example.com.
We've had some wonderful feedback thus far.
We hope to see you at the Nobleboro Annual Town Meeting this Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m.
