Waynflete defeated Wiscasset on penalty kicks Tuesday night under the lights in Wiscasset. The game could not have been more evenly matched, between the fourth seed Wiscasset (11-2-1) and fifth seed Waynflete (10-2-2).
The two squads battled to a scoreless tie through 80 minutes of regulation and two 15 minute overtime periods.
The game was then settled on penalty kicks. Flyer keeper Juliana Harwood stopped Wiscasset's first PK, taken by Maeve Carlson. Miranda McIntire, Sarah Hanley and Kasey Cromwell found net for Wiscasset.
Waynflete connected on their first three PKs, then shanked the fourth one wide, to even the score at 3-3 going into the fifth set. Harwood stopped Kayla Gordon's shot, and Flyer Ella Millard scored on hers to seal a 1-0 Waynflete win in the West Class C quarter-final match-up.
The Flyer's offside trap severely interfered with Wiscasset's offense power deep inside. The Lady Wolverines had a goal called back in the second overtime on their 10th offside call of the night.
First-half action saw Waynflete hold a 12-8 edge in shots, with Gordon making nine saves and Harwood seven. Briana Goud made the defensive play of the frame when she stopped a shot with her chest just in front of the goal line with nine minutes left in the half.
Gordon made a couple of huge plays in the second half, including corralling a loose ball on the goal line, and tipping a direct kick over the top of the net. Harwood was equally as impressive, making a diving save on a Hanley breakaway.
Hanna Foye came up with a couple of huge defensive plays on Waynflete breakaways. Goud made another goal line save after Gordon blocked a shot. The half belonged to Waynflete, who out-hustled Wiscasset to control the midfield and hold a 13-8 advantage in shots.
Both teams got off four shots each in the first overtime period. Harwood made a diving save on a Hanley rocket two minutes into the OT, and stopped Wiscasset on a corner kick. On the other end of the field, Gordon, in net for Wiscasset, tipped a shot off the cross bar. Goud, Foye and Michaela Trudeau made big defensive plays in the OT period. Wiscasset got off two shots in the final 1:12 to play, both stopped by Harwood.
Waynflete controlled the second overtime, unleashing 15 shots to Wiscasset's two. Wiscasset looked to win with 11 and a half minutes to go, but their goal was called back due to offsides. Gordon made eight stops to preserve the shutout and send the game to decisive PKs.
Waynflete held a 39 - 22 edge in shots. Gordon made 31 saves for the Wolverines, and Harwood 18 for the Flyers.
