This week we have the opportunity to play with divas and comediennes; magic and mirth, just what the summer requires. Come take a break from the heat and enjoy the pleasure of escaping.
The Met HD summer encore: 'Armida'
This mythical story of a sorceress who enthralls men in her island prison has inspired operatic settings by a multitude of composers, including Gluck, Haydn, and Dvorák. Renée Fleming stars in the title role of Rossini's version, opposite no fewer than five tenors. Director Mary Zimmerman describes the work as "a buried treasure, a box of jewels." "Armida" is a fanciful and magical tale with "an epic, enchanted quality and a tremendous visual element." Thursday July 11 at 7 p.m.
'Frances Ha' (R)
In this old-fashioned romantic comedy (think Carole Lombard or Marilyn Monroe) we meet Frances, an aspiring dancer zigzagging through New York. Noah Baumbach's film evokes the French New Wave with its on-the-fly, black-and-white cinematography and the fizzy recycled music on the soundtrack, while it also captures, wittily and tenderly, the particular anxieties and pleasures of being young right now. Opens Friday, July 12 and plays through Wednesday, July 17 at 7 p.m., with matinees on Sunday and Wednesday at 2 p.m. (no showing Monday night).
The Maine Coast Book Shop and Chats with Champions present acclaimed author, Linda Greenlaw, talking about her new book, "Lifesaving Lessons: Notes from an Accidental Mother." This event is free. Reservations recommended. Advance purchase of "Lifesaving Lessons" is 20 percent off and reserves best seats. Call the Maine Coast Book Shop 563-3207 or just drop by the store. Monday, July 15 at 7 p.m.
Our final MET encore of the season, Verdi's "La Traviata" will play Thursday, July 18. "Stories We Tell" opens July 19 and will be followed by "Before Midnight" (July 26) and "Becoming Traviata" (Aug 2).
