As the summer comes to an end and the tourists return home, Round Top Ice Cream in Damariscotta is reminded of the wonderful support they receive from the local community for their product.
"Each year I am surprised at how busy we continue to be into September, particularly on those warm fall days," said Round Top owner Stephanie Poland. "It's nice to see so many familiar faces in the shop."
In an effort to return the kindness, Round Top Ice Cream will be hosting a "community support day" on the last day of their season, Tuesday, Oct. 15.
"In the past we have donated the proceeds of our last day of the season to large nonprofit corporations who do wonderful work, like the American Cancer Society, but this year we deiced to keep the money more local," Poland said.
This year Round Top will focus on a family in Nobleboro who recently lost their belongings in a fire. At the time of the fire, they were without rental insurance and are currently staying with family until they can find a new home.
"We thought it would be fitting to donate the proceeds of our final day open in 2013 to this family," Poland said. "What better way to end the season than to see kids and adults in the community enjoy one last ice cream and know that it was for a good cause as well."
Round Top will donate the time for staff to serve the ice cream and all of the product used that day so that 100 percent of the proceeds go to this family in need. They will be open regular business hours from 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m.
