Gingerbread House Making Class

The seventh annual Gingerbread Spectacular is once again coming to the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor this December. In preparation for this extraordinarily sweet event, long-time gingerbread house creators Pat and Kevin Kiley will offer a free class in the fine, and sometimes hilarious art, of making gingerbread houses.

The class is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m., at the Opera House.

Participants will learn how to design and build structures; receive hints and fool-proof recipes, and will have a chance to ask questions while decorating some of their own houses. The class is open to all ages, but those under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

There is no charge for the class, but those interested in participating are asked to register by calling the Opera House at 633-6855.

Class participants and community members are encouraged to enter this year's Gingerbread Spectacular which kicks-off with the Dough Ball on Friday, Dec. 13 and continues throughout the weekend of Dec. 14 and 15.

In past years the Spectacular has seen gingerbread exhibits including castles and farms, snow globes and cabins, windmills and churches, outhouses and wharves, local landmarks and buildings of all sizes and shapes. Prizes are awarded for the most spectacular as well as the largest, the most creative, the best local landmark, the best holiday spirit, the most obsessive compulsive and other categories as determined by the judges.

Those planning to create and build an entry for this year's Gingerbread Spectacular are encouraged to sign-up at the Opera House, or by calling 633-6855. Entrants do not have to participate in the class on Nov. 20 but may wish to attend to check out the competition.
