Tom Hanks stars in Columbia Pictures' "Captain Phillips."

As the days turn toward winter, and now that the clocks have been turned back, the dark seems to come earlier and earlier.

Lincoln Theater has matinees daily from Wednesday through Sunday, usually at 2 p.m. to ward of the early evenings. If the preference is not to be out for entertainment at night, consider taking in a film at one of our matinees. You won't regret it. The popcorn is just as good ... as are the movies.

'Rush' (R)
Ron Howard's entertaining film, "Rush," distills the thrill of racing into a clash of personalities. One nail-biting face-off, a catastrophic accident and a wild comeback - is about getting inside the heads of James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl).

The two are Formula One titans and rivals, who, in 1976, helped push the sport into mainstream consciousness. "Rush" (two hours, three minutes) closes Thursday, Nov. 14 with screenings at 2 and 7 p.m.

'Captain Phillips' (PG-13)
In his latest film, "Captain Phillips," (two hours, 14 minutes) director Paul Greengrass revisits the true story of Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), an American taken hostage in 2009 by Somalis who commandeered his cargo ship in the Indian Ocean.

Surprising and satisfyingly complex, it opens as a tale of men and work, and then revs up into a camera-shuddering thriller.

It's a tough, political look at power and the wretched of the earth. Opens Friday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and continues Saturday at 2 p.m., Sunday at 7 p.m., concluding Wednesday and Thursday with screenings at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Kenneth Branagh in 'Macbeth'
National Theatre Live will broadcast Manchester International Festival's production of "Macbeth," (two hours) with Kenneth Branagh ("My Week With Marilyn," "Hamlet") in his first Shakespeare performance in over a decade as Macbeth, and Alex Kingston ("Doctor Who," "ER") as Lady Macbeth.

Directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, this electrifying new production of Shakespeare's tragic tale of ambition and treachery unfolds within the walls of an intimate de-consecrated Manchester church. Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.

What's next
Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Viola Davis in "Prisoners" is up next. Thanksgiving weekend we'll run two different movies - matinees for the younger people of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs II" and evenings for the adults of "Gravity."

The theater's complete November schedule and information on all theater events is available at, calling the theater's box office at 563-3424, dropping by for a visit, or viewing the Facebook page.

The box office is open Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and one hour before curtain for each show. Please be sure to sign up for our weekly e-blast on Monday when a listing of what is playing for the week at Lincoln Theater is released. To sign up, just send an email to and never miss a performance at the theater. The Lincoln Theater is located at 2 Theater St., in downtown Damariscotta.
