Richard Armitage leads the dwarves in “The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug” now playing at The Harbor Theatre.

"All Is Lost" starring Robert Redford plays Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. followed by a special evening double feature, two films for the price of one: the original "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (2012) at 9 p.m. and the new "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" (2013) at 11:59 p.m. at The Harbor Theatre.

Robert Redford stars in "All Is Lost" this weekend, a gripping, visceral and powerfully moving tribute to ingenuity and resilience.

During a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, a man wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left him floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm.

Thursday, Dec. 12 at 9 p.m., Harbor Theatre presents a special double feature, the original "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (2012), and the all-new "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" at 11:59 p.m.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," PG13, features an all-star cast including Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugo Weaving, Billy Connolly, Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchette, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, and Stephen Colbert (camero appearance). It originally played at The Harbor Theatre a year ago, and returns for one show only at 9 p.m.

The main event starts at 11:59 p.m. as the theater presents the all-new "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."

This is the new epic fantasy adventure co-written, produced and directed by Peter Jackson, the second installment of a three-part film series based on J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel "The Hobbit." The new film includes many familiar and some new faces including Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom.

The storyline continues the events of "An Unexpected Journey," in which the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) travels with the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and a company of 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) into the Kingdom of Erebor, taking them through Mirkwood, Esgaroth, and Dale to combat the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

In addition to the Thursday sneak screening, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," plays Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Theatre memberships, renewals, gift certificates and screen ads help the theatre keep going off-season. Further information is available in the lobby, or at: http://www.harbortheatre.net. Members receive $2 ticket discounts each visit to the theatre. Businesses sponsoring screen ads (a tax-deductible business expense), receive free membership. The theater is also available for parties and special events.

Visit the theater on Facebook or call the 24-hour movie phone 633-0438. The Harbor Theatre is located at the junction of Routes 27 and 96 in Boothbay Harbor, across from Hannaford market.
