The Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association plans their Annual Chili Cook-off and Volunteer Celebration for Wednesday, Feb. 12 starting at 6 p.m. in the group's headquarters in Newcastle.

The Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association's Annual Chili Cook-off and Volunteer Celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12 starting at 6 p.m. in Newcastle.

Anyone is welcome to join in to help celebrate the work of the many volunteers and to hear about upcoming volunteer opportunities throughout the watershed. Yummy meat and vegetarian chili will be on hand to be tasted and voted on. Salads and condiments will round out the dinner fare, and everyone gets to vote for the tastiest chili.

What better way to beat a cold February evening than to eat warm food and meet old and new friends?

The SVCA will also be celebrating its 20th year of the Volunteer Water Quality Testing Program on the Sheepscot River. Volunteers will share their experiences and stories on the river during their test mornings, as well as a bit of information that has been gathered over these two decades.

The Water Quality Program is only one of many volunteer opportunities at SVCA which also includes being a preserve steward, property monitoring, trail planning and work, education, office help, duck box monitoring, wildlife habitat improvement projects, and much more.

Volunteer opportunities vary in time frame from two hours a year, to a couple of hours per month or week. There is something for everyone.

Come help celebrate all the work that gets done during the course of a year, and hear about SVCA's watershed work. Please feel free to join in and RSVP (so organizers know they have enough food) by calling the office, 586-5616 or emailing svca@sheepscot.org

Anyone who would like to enter a chili in the event, please let organizers know, but otherwise there is no reason to bring anything.

The Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association is a member organization advocating shared stewardship of Maine's 58-mile Sheepscot River since 1969. Today, more than 3,671 acres and 15 miles of riverfront are protected including seven public preserves.

The SVCA's ongoing monitoring of water quality helps ensure the watershed's ecosystems stay healthy, including its Atlantic salmon habitat. SVCA's mapping services, technical support and educational programs encourage prudent land use so the resources people value today are conserved forever.
