Calling All Chefs for the First-Ever Alewife Cooking Contest

This year there will be an alewife cooking contest at the Fish Ladder Restoration Festival. Entries, which can be an appetizer or main course, can include fresh alewives, smoked alewives, or both.

The contest will take place at the fish house at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 25. Each entry should be accompanied by a recipe with a list of ingredients.

The organizers hope to attract some old-time recipes and some creative new cuisine using a truly under-utilized species. Entries will be judged by a panel of local chefs and other interested parties.

Smoked alewives may be obtained at Mulligan's Smokehouse. Check closer to the time for availability. Fresh alewives may be obtained from the fish agent, Mark Becker, during harvest times at the fish house.
