Most artists take fewer and fewer risks as they get older, but Kathy Mattea is a striking exception. She did not play it safe while she charted mainstream country hits-16 of them reaching the top 10 - and she is not about to start now.

Mattea, one of the most sure-footed country-pop song interpreters of her generation, caught everyone off guard with an album of old-timey Appalachian mining songs called "Coal." She has delved even deeper into her Appalachian heritage with her most recent album release "Calling Me Home."

On Saturday, July 19, this Grammy winning musician comes to the midcoast to perform at the historic Opera House in Boothbay Harbor.

Mattea's new direction could not have taken her further from her old way of doing things. Where once she was pitched songs by Music Row writers, now she collects the generations-old and new but old-in-soul tunes that move her at folk gatherings, and rounds out her repertoire through extensive research.

In performances she is joined on stage by her band mates Bill Cooley, Eamonn O'Rourke and David Spicher.

Tickets for Kathy Mattea and her band are available through the Opera House box office at 86 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor or by calling 633-5159. The box office is open Tuesday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are also available online at Advance purchase tickets are $35. Tickets purchased on the day of the performance are $40 if available. The concert is at 8 p.m. Doors for seating open at 7:30 p.m. The historic upstairs bar will open at 7 p.m.
