Back Talk From The Back House
By Nancy Wilson

The desk mess: what, again?
Yes, indeed, the desk mess surfaces yet again as a back talk topic, but this time, for an altogether different reason. And that reason is that it no longer exists.

I know, you don't believe me, but if you came to my house and went out here to the North Room and looked, you would see that it is truly gone.

I got at it the other day, for yet another good reason. I have a deal with a friend to buy an old computer that I can use for backup whenever Penelope decides to let me down, and crash, as she too often does on a Monday morning when I'm sweating toward deadline, and need her the most.

This other computer (which won't get a name until she's actually been installed) needs a place to go, and the only available space out here is on the other desk.

I could possibly make space beside Penelope, but that would make her table much too crowded, and I'd just as soon not confuse myself with her over here; I'm sure she'd much prefer her own space. Besides, Penelope might get jealous, and I wouldn't be able to deal with that.

So I cleaned off the desk (yes, I really did). I went through all the papers and file folders that were sitting there, sorting them out into two folders (unless you want to call the trash bag a folder, in which case, three): social security records, and poems and the rest of the stuff, all of which will eventually go into the file cabinet when I get around to it.

Of course, this could take as long as the original mess took to clean up, but I know for certain that it won't go anywhere until I get at it.

Whether I do the same with the file cabinet, which is also in dire need, is anyone's guess. For one thing, the contents can't be seen; for another, there's still space in it to put more stuff so I really don't have to hurry about it. And that's a good thing since I can't hurry about anything, anyway.

Now I'm wondering whether I should feel pleased with myself for finally tackling this terrible task. How many years did it take? How many years have I been writing about it? Only since I've moved to Bremen, anyway; I've lived here longer than at any other place where I've been (for me, at least, this is a very good thing).

And lastly, after the new/old computer is installed, what if there's a bit of space around it? Wouldn't that have to have something to fill it? I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
