Quiet Couple Wins Television Contest

By Eleanor Cade Busby

Gerry and Roland Jones, of Jefferson, had no idea they were even nominated for Maine's Cutest Couple, a photo contest sponsored by Portland CBS television affiliate, WGME Channel 13.

The Jones' daughter said the decision to enter a photo of her parents was a last-minute affair.

"I had a hard time uploading the picture but I got the entry in just in time," Brenda said.

Jones never thought her parents would win so she decided not to tell them. "When we found out they were in the four finalists, I took my computer and drove to their house," she said, "The whole drive there I was back to being a kid. All I could think was, 'What do I do now?'"

Brenda said her parents are a very private couple and she spoke with them for this story.

Roland served in World War II in the Army from 1942 to 1945, Brenda said. "He went into the service without even finishing high school," she said. The couple met "possibly at Moody's Diner" her mom Gerry told her, "It was so long ago."

The Jones raised eight children on a small farm where Gerry grew vegetables and canned produce to feed their family while Roland was a woodcutter. Eventually he bought a dump truck and backhoe and expanded his business to include gravel.

Gerry and Roland Jones have never had a credit card or a computer. "They are a real down-to-earth Maine couple," said Brenda.

The Jones' got a kick out of the picture and the comments people made on the station's website. One stranger called their 67 years married "a true lifetime achievement."

People voted online and a particular source of pleasure for the couple was learning their grandchildren had taken up the cause on Facebook, sharing the picture and story with their friends.

One grandson, Jacob Jones, is a student at Central Maine Community College in Auburn and launched his own campaign enlisting friends to sign up and vote. Gerry and Roland are proud their grandson is a new member of the Maine Army National Guard.

WGME Channel 13 ran the picture and their story on Valentine's Day when it was announced that they were the grand prize winners.

"Maine's Cutest Couple" think that the true cutest couple are the two English Springer Spaniels that share the picture with them, Bella and Stella.

"It's really two cute couples," Gerry said, "but the dogs are cuter."
