Ethel Isabelle Holloway Hoppe
Feb. 9, 1914 - April 15, 2013

Ethel Isabelle Holloway Hoppe, 99, of Rockport, passed quietly on April 15 after a short stay at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta recovering from hip surgery.

Born in Kingfield, Feb. 9, 1914, she was the daughter of Harry and Sarah Douglas Holloway. She married Wheaton Hoppe in Livermore Falls on Nov. 25, 1939.

Ethel loved her family and her greatest joy was taking care of them, especially the children. While she never had a driver's license, her family would joke that a car never left the dooryard without her wanting to be in it and on the go. She loved shopping, taking road trips, attending plays at CHRHS and flying around the country with her granddaughter. She was always willing to try new things, go to new places and got a laugh out of being photographed while doing something silly. An avid reader, she also enjoyed Country and Western music, loved to cook and her home and kitchen were always open to family who stopped by. Ethel was a former Sunday school teacher and member of the West Rockport Baptist Church where she attended services every week until she was no longer able to do so.

Ethel was predeceased by her brother, Douglas Holloway; sisters, Kay Copp, and Frances Brown; and husband, Wheaton Hoppe.

She is survived by her son, Robert Hoppe and fiancée Joan Banden of Rockport; sister, Pearl Pinkham of Damariscotta; brother, Jim Douglas and wife Alice of Portland; grandchildren, Bobbi Start of Dana Point, Cal. and husband Dana, Penny Hoppe and Greg Eaton of Rockport, Kelly Benson and husband Donald of Lincolnville, and Michael Hoppe and wife Lori of Hope; great-grandchildren, Tobias Lawry and wife Christine, Heather Whitney and husband Wayne McAtee, Sara Whitney and friend Brian Boody, Joshua Benson and wife Kirsty, Jammi Benson, Dani Hoppe, and Tyler Hoppe; great-great grandchildren, Helena Lawry, Caleb Whitney, Carson Whitney, Owen McAtee, Natasha Curit, Madison Bission, Sean Benson, Emma Benson, Brandon Benson, Brooke Benson, and Benjamin Benson; and beloved cat, Precious.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit 6-8 p.m., Thurs., April 18 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. Celebration of Ethel's life 2 p.m., Fri., April 19 at the West Rockport Baptist Church on Park Street. Private family interment will be in Seaview Cemetery, Rockport.

Memorial gifts in her name may be made to the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
