Thomas Wesley Proe
Jan. 8, 1927 - May 31, 2013

Thomas Wesley Proe, 86, lifetime resident of Millis, Mass., died on May 31 at his home with Elizabeth at his side. Thomas was born on Jan. 8, 1927 to Laura (Paradis) and James Wesley Proe in Millis, near Proe's Corner.

Thomas attended local schools, leaving high school at 17 to join the Navy where he served on the SS Pacific at the end of WWII. Tom was proud to serve in the Navy, as his father had during WWI. When he returned home, he married Elizabeth Flagg and started his family.

Together with his father, Thomas began the family business of custom carpentry. Thomas was a skilled finish carpenter who took pride in his work. Thomas studied and taught at Wentworth Institute for several years. Contracting and building beautiful houses was his life's work for over 40 years. Restoring period houses in Dover, Sherborn, and Millis as well as working on an underground house were his pleasures. The houses that Thomas and his father constructed were built to last gracefully. Thomas and his father restored the altar of the Congregational Church in Millis where they were active members of the congregation.

Thomas enjoyed sailing off the Cape, hunting and fishing in Maine and Vermont, searching out architectural details throughout New England on long Sunday drives, and being with his family swimming and hiking. As a young man he was passionate about hockey.

Thomas was predeceased by his parents, Laura and James Wesley Proe; an aunt; and sisters, Katherine Connors and Emily King.

Thomas is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth Proe; son, Wesley Proe II and wife Diane of Millis, Mass.; daughters, Bonnie Proe Kanavich and husband Paul of Whitefield, and Susan Proe Iadonisi and husband Jeffery of Sandwich, Mass.; grandchildren, Wesley Babb of Brattleboro, Vt., Jessica Babb Williams of Topsham, Jeffery Iadonisi of Sandwich, Mass., Lisa Iadonisi Glaser of Sandwich, Mass., Myles Proe of Millis, Mass., and MacKenzie Proe of Millis, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Elliot, Scarlett, and Amelia Williams, Russell Babb, and Luke Glaser; niece, Wendy King Dennis; and nephews, Kenneth King, Thomas Connors, and William Connors.

Services were held at the United Church of Christ in Millis, Mass. on June 4.
