Richard Carew Rice

Richard Carew Rice, 51, well loved and respected in the Baltimore and Damariscotta communities, died on Oct. 14 at his home in Ruxton, Md.

The son of John Hubner Rice Jr. of Monkton, Md. and Carew Cotton Rice Lee of Bethesda, Md., Richard Rice was born and raised in Baltimore, Md.

He was graduated from the Gilman School in Baltimore in 1980. While a student at Gilman, Mr. Rice participated in varsity soccer and lacrosse. In 1984, he was graduated from The University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in economics. He became an accomplished skier while at college in Boulder and remained there until he returned to Baltimore in 1988 where he worked at Mid-South, a kitchen supply company.

In 1992, Mr. Rice started his career as a kitchen and bath designer when he opened Mill Valley, a premiere cabinet design company in Baltimore. He was well known throughout the area for the beautiful, classic kitchens and baths which he designed.

Always a positive, cheerful, and fun-loving person, Mr. Rice enjoyed playing tennis and paddle tennis at L'hirondelle Club in Baltimore, where he was a member. Even more, he loved his summers at Cottesbrooke, near Damariscotta. For six generations, the Cotton family, of which Mr. Rice is a direct descendant, has lived in the Damariscotta area.

Mr. Rice is survived by his wife of 21 years, Shawn Elizabeth Bartsch Rice; children, Wylie Carew Rice, and Carter Elizabeth Rice; mother, Carew Cotton Rice Lee; father, John Hubner Rice Jr.; and brothers, John Hubner Rice III of Roland Park, Md., and Douglas Cotton Rice of Sherwood Forest, Md.
