Robert C. Hodgkins
Jan. 24, 1930 - Feb. 11, 2014

Robert C. Hodgkins, 84, of Jefferson, passed away on the morning of Feb. 11 at the LincolnHealth - Miles Campus in Damariscotta, after a lengthy period of declining health.

He was born Jan. 24, 1930 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Chester and Aini Hodgkins. He graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1949 and entered the Air Force in 1950. In December of 1952 he married Nancy Buchan.

He spent many years working with his brother-in-law, Austin Pinkham, doing carpentry work. In later years he worked at Bath Iron Works as a pipe fitter until his retirement.

He was a devoted husband, loving father and a good provider. He loved working the land and spent much of his free time planting vegetable gardens, cutting firewood and logs for lumber. He remodeled the family farmhouse and built a barn, fenced the fields and then raised cattle, sheep and other animals.

An avid sportsman he enjoyed everything about the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and taking walks, in later years often accompanied by a faithful springer spaniel named Jessie. He especially cherished time spent with his great-grandchildren.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his boys and always shared stories and insights he had learned from years of careful observation. The stories became a staple to be served with every family get together.

He was a talented craftsman who enjoyed woodworking in particular. He built many beautiful pieces of furniture for his home as well as working with his wife on hand crafted wooden items for her shop and for gifts.

Robert is predeceased by his wife, Nancy; sisters, Eva Adkins, and Marjorie Pinkham; and grandson, Jeremy Dunham.

He is survived by sons, Robert, David, and Jonathan Hodgkins; daughter, Deborah Dunham and husband Perley, all of Jefferson; grandchildren, Jeffrey Dunham, Aaron Hodgkins, Matthew Hodgkins, and Danielle Hodgkins; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Hodgkins, Braeden Hodgkins, Jayden Hodgkins, Elizabeth Hodgkins, and Caleb Hodgkins; and many nieces and nephews.

A time to visit with the family will be held from 3-5 p.m., Sat., Feb. 22 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. There will be a graveside service, with military honors, at the Hopkins Cemetery in Jefferson in the spring.
