George Gordon Hughes

George Gordon Hughes, 73, died March 1 at Kobacher Hospice House, Columbus, Ohio, after battling cancer this last year.

He was born in Columbus, Ohio and has resided in South Bristol for many years. He was a graduate of St. Charles College in Columbus, Ohio, and attended graduate school in theology at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. George started his career in insurance and was very active in Ohio politics as a campaign manager and finally as treasurer for the state of Ohio Democratic Party. He spent most of his career as a real estate investor. He was involved in historic preservation and numerous real estate syndications throughout the mid west. George had a strong social conscience and was an active member of numerous community boards in both Ohio and Maine.

George lived his life with gusto and a wonderful sense of humor and he never met a stranger. He traveled the world with his family and dearest friends and all are left with wonderful memories of those travel adventures. All who knew George knew his passion was sailing. He was happiest taking a boat to weather and sharing his love of being on the water with all who joined him on his boat.

George filled his home with the sound of classical music, family and friends from near and far. He loved a party, a glass of red wine and sharing thoughts and ideas with family and friends late into the night. George was proud of his Irish heritage and would often share "Irish on all four sides" with a hearty laugh.

George is survived by his wife, Susan Gough Hughes; son, George Hughes Jr.; daughter, Sarah F. Hughes; children by marriage, Teri (William) Flynn, Travis (Joyce) Holland, and Scott Holland. He was a devoted grandfather, Pater, to his five precious "Grands," Audrey and Jane Flynn and Parker, Colton, and Jillian Holland. He is also survived by siblings James J. Hughes, Mimi Hughes Murphy, Michael (Carter) Hughes and their families, and many deep friendships.

A celebration of life for George was held on March 8 at St. Charles Chapel in Columbus, Ohio.

At the CLC YMCA, George served as a Board member for many years and was instrumental in developing their capital campaigns to benefit local residents. Those who wish may contribute to the CLC YMCA Swimming Pool Fund, P.O. Box 787, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
