Mabelle A. Sykes, of Newcastle, died peacefully the morning of May 9 at Winship Green in Bath.
She was born on July 6, 1932 to Charles and Marguerite (Gamage) Lessner. She attended local schools, graduating from Lincoln Academy in the class of 1949.
For many years she worked in the restaurant business, most notably at the Bristol Diner where she was well-known for her fish chowder and apple dumplings.
In 1980 she went to work for Masters Machine in Round Pond where she worked up until her retirement at 80 years of age. She was a dedicated and loyal employee and had many a work story to share.
She was a talented quilter and seamstress and up until the Alzheimer's over took her, she was an avid reader and a whiz at puzzles of all kinds. She loved to shop and was often done with her Christmas shopping with plenty of summer still left.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Norman and Gerald; sisters, Gloria and Shirley; sons, Gerald "Roy" Sykes, and Robert "Bunky" Sykes; and fiancé, Leslie Charlton.
She is survived by son, Michael and wife Robyn of Waldoboro; daughters, Alison Brewer and husband Scott of Nobleboro, and Jennifer Clark and husband Bill of Bristol; grandchildren, Lori Grover, Richard Sykes, Robert Sykes, Cory Sykes and wife Thelma, Donald Sykes and wife Dawn, Joshua Sykes, Dorothy Sewall and husband Joe, Sandy Poland and husband Fernald, Jeremy Sykes, Roy Sykes, Andrew Knight, Jeremy Philbrook and wife Keeley, Shane Sykes, Michael Sykes Jr. and wife Faith, Timothy Sykes and wife Heather, Sarah Sykes Flaherty and fiancée Cassandra, Christopher Brewer and wife Megan, Morgan Brewer, Lesley Vakas and husband Andrew, B.J. Clark, Nathan Clark, and Austin Clark; along with 22 great-grandchildren with another coming in July; and one great-great-grandchild.
In keeping with her wishes there will be no service and her ashes will be scattered at a later date.
