Glenn Lyle Allen
Jan. 14, 1947 - June 2, 2014

Glenn Lyle Allen, 67, passed away with his wife by his side on the evening of June 2. Glenn married Cheryl Heitner at sunrise on Mt. Cadillac, Mt. Desert Island, on May 24, 1992. Glenn and Cheryl were partners in life, passionately sharing their love for skiing, bicycling, sailing, hiking and traveling.

Glenn was born to Betty and Rollin Allen on Jan. 14, 1947 in Detroit, Mich., and grew up on a farm in Hubbertston, Mich.

Glenn went to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and graduated in Aeronautical Engineering in 1970. He worked for General Electric for 33 years, retiring in 2003 as an engineer testing jet engines in design and production.

Glenn had many outdoor interests: cross country skiing, mountaineering, rock climbing, hiking, biking (many tandem rallies, including to the Netherlands), sailing, and kayaking. Significant trips included Kilimanjaro for their 50th birthday celebration, Peruvian Andes, Alaska, Austria for their honeymoon, Switzerland, Canada, Norway (1985 hut to hut tour) and Nova Scotia. Glenn bicycled solo across the U.S. in 1989. He and Cheryl owned a ski chalet in the White Mountains, and led many outings with friends. In the last six years, these outings have continued in their winter home in Colorado.

Glenn was a prolific volunteer, co-leading the AMC Spring Rock Climbing program in the 1970s. More recently, he and Cheryl were central to the Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center of Granby, Colorado, being the resident wax guru, giving ski lessons, and running all aspects of the touring center shop. Here at their Maine location, Glenn was past commodore of the Cabadetis Boat Club and sailed with the Cape Dory association on their boat Evergreen.

Glenn was happiest solving problems, working on projects, and helping others. He designed and built their home on Muscongus Bay, and was constantly perfecting their sailboat.

Besides his wife, Glenn is survived by brothers, Dennis of Kentucky, Dick of Oregon, Jerry of Indiana, and Ken of California; sister, Cherri of Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bristol First Responders, 104 South Side Rd., New Harbor, ME 04554.
