Richard E. Kent
March 18, 1920 - July 24, 2014

Richard E. Kent, 94, of Waldoboro, died peacefully July 24 at Horizons Living & Rehab Center.

Richard was born in East Providence, R.I. on March 18, 1920, the son of the late Edward E. and Alice A. (King) and moved to Maine in the late 1980s. He is a retired teamster out of Local Union No. 251, Providence, R.I. He would enthusiastically speak about his time with Akers Motor Lines and the fact that at retirement he had driven five million miles without an accident. He was nicknamed The Deacon because he always stopped to lend a hand to someone in trouble on the road.

Up until a few months ago, Richard drove, picked up his mail, bought the newspaper and paid his bills through local businesses in Waldoboro and Damariscotta personally because he enjoyed talking to people at each of his "stops." Volunteer time was something he loved with the Central Lincoln County YMCA in Damariscotta along with the Miles Memorial Hospital rummage sales. He and his wife Barbara had a table at Montsweag Flea Market in Woolwich for quite some time and forged close friendships with fellow vendors.

Richard was very proud of his family's civic-minded heritage and talked fondly of his days working in his family's general store located off Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence, R.I. as well as his family's dairy farm, the largest farm in East Providence, White Rock Farm. The Kent Heights section of East Providence, RI was named for the Kent family and many of the streets were named by the Kents. Richard is a Mayflower descendant.

He was predeceased by his son, Ronald D.; grandson, Joshua; and siblings, Lois Duckworth, Alice Benson, Esther Anderson, Virginia Berwick, Everett, Ralph and Harold Kent.

He is survived by his lovely wife of 71 years, Barbara H. (Vardner); children and their spouses, Margaret E. and Dean Ahlquist, and Scott E. and Deborah Kent; grandchildren, Rebecca, Amanda, Isaac, Damien, and Sarah; great-grandchildren, Sophie, Aidan, Chantae and Megan; and sibling, E. Leonard Kent.

A memorial celebration of Richard's life will be held privately.
