Vernal Pool Field Trip
Pa Verna Preserve
Sunday, April 28: Vernal Pool Field Trip. Explore the mysteries of the water gems known as vernal pools, where wood frogs call, salamanders grow, and graceful little creatures called fairy shrimp lead their entire lives. The public is invited to come along on a vernal pool exploration led by Bonnie Potter at PWA''s La Verna Preserve. Participants will learn about amphibians and invertebrates and the vital role that vernal pools play in forest ecosystems. These small, seasonal watery breeding grounds are a vital part of a landscape-level habitat matrix, enabling healthy populations of amphibians and providing a veritable smorgasbord for predators. Participants are asked to gather at 1 p.m. at the kiosk of La Verna Preserve. Bring waders if you have them or wear footwear suitable to getting wet. No experience is necessary, there is no cost to participate, and everyone is invited to attend.
DIRECTIONS: Meet at the parking area at 1:00 p.m. Take Rte. 32 south from Round Pond. Go 3.5 miles south of Round Pond Post Office (which is the same as 3 miles north of New Harbor). Notice Ocean Hill cemetery on your right. After that is an old Federal style home with a modern house right beside it. Immediately beside that there is a parking area for the preserve. If you get to North Country Wind Bells, you have gone too far.
